The core of the system is the Waves Enterprise blockchain network which implements the interactions between voters, as well as the acceptance, tallying and storage of the data about their selections in an intact form. The data are stored in an encrypted form on each node of a decentralized system, which rules out the possibility of their modification or loss. Thanks to the role model integrated into the blockchain network, only authorized users can access the voting process, its contents and results.
Each voting poll is securely protected by cryptographic algorithms that ensure the encryption of the voting data and the participants’ choices. The cryptographic protocol provides the possibility to check data, prove its integrity and immutability at all voting stages, starting from the moment the voter sends their vote (1) to processing of the votes (2) to the finalization of the voting results (3). The protocol makes use of the following algorithms:

  • DKG Pedersen 91 on elliptical curves
  • Homomorphic encryption (ElGamal encryption on elliptical curves)
  • Zero-disclosure proofs: Zero-Knowledge Range Proofs and Zero-Knowledge Decryption Proofs

The anonymity of voting is enabled by an algorithm based on the ElGamal encryption scheme, which possesses the properties of additive homomorphism and is known as homomorphic encryption. The mechanism of homomorphic encryption, based on elliptic curves, allows for the counting of ballots in an encrypted form without disclosing any specific voter’s choice.
Thanks to the use of zero-knowledge proof technique, end users will be able to verify the correctness of a claimed result of an election. The voting process is transparent and censorship-resistant since organizers do not know how the voting participants voted. In contrast, participants can check whether their vote was registered and correctly counted in the voting results.

The users’ interaction with the service does not require any special skills and is performed in an intuitive web interface. There are all of the tools that organizers and voters need. With the help of a special design tool, one can create a voting process with the required questions and response options, specify the voting date, invite participants and send them notifications about the planned event.

Can I create a public poll?
In the current implementation of the service, each participant’s email must be added to the list by the organizer. The participants who were added to the list receive invitations, after which they need to create and activate their accounts. The functionality of conducting open voting polls may appear in future versions of the service.
Can I pay for the subscriptions with WEST tokens?
Yes, however, there are limitations. Only citizens of European Union nations can pay for the subscription with WEST tokens.
